I-N-I Courses

HDFS 199– Internship Prep & Experience (2-4 credit hours); Offered in Spring Semester

A guided pathway to career exploration and professional growth through short-term internship experiences for students in the Illinois Neurodiversity Initiative. The first half of the course focuses on students identifying interests, researching potential placements, and learning about workplace expectations. The second half of the course includes a short internship experience either individually arranged or program-supported to allow for hands-on application of the skills they’ve learned. The course includes discussions and reflections about how to navigate and advocate inclusive work settings. Prerequisite: HDFS 202 or consent of the instructor. (Open to sophomores and above in INI who have completed HDFS 202.)

This course examines the application of self-advocacy skills within global and intercultural contexts, with a focus on supporting the unique strengths and needs of neurodivergent students. Through critical exploration of international customs, and cultural communication practices, students will analyze how advocacy strategies must adapt across diverse environments. Emphasis is placed on developing individualized approaches to navigating unfamiliar systems, articulating needs, and fostering cross-cultural understanding. The course is open to juniors and seniors in INI. For those in the 2-credit section, the course will culminate in a faculty-led short-term study abroad experience during winter break with additional focus on travel preparation. (Open to juniors and seniors in INI who have completed prior courses or have consent of the instructor.)

HDFS 398– INI Legacy (1 credit hour) Spring Semester

Students will choose and complete a legacy project that will increase education and awareness about neurodiversity in campus, community, or work-place environments. (Open to seniors in INI or have consent of the instructor.)
